Devy Diamond: LaNorris Sellers

Devy Diamonds: LaNorris Sellers, Quarterback, South Carolina

Welcome to Devy Diamonds: Sellers was a three-star prospect out of South Florence High School in Florence, South Carolina. He originally had five offers before committing to Virginia in July of 2021. His commitment would not last long. In January of 2022, he received an offer from Syracuse. He decided to then decommit from Virginia, and in May of 2022, he committed to Syracuse. However, in 2022 he would receive five more offers causing him to decommit from Syracuse. That same day of his decommitment he chose to commit to South Carolina.

Last season, Sellers only saw action in three games displaying his arm in only one game. He threw with 100 percent accuracy for 86 yards and two touchdowns in that game. In the three games, he ran five times for 51 yards and one additional touchdown. Sellers is considered a redshirt freshman with tons of talent, however, he still has lots to prove. In the sample size we have seen from him, he showed he can throw with precision, and can extend the play with his feet.

On the other hand, in week one, with him firmly under center as the starting quarterback we saw the pressure get the best of him. He was sacked four times and threw with 43.5 percent completion. Ouch! The bright side, sort of, is he did run the ball 22 times which was two less than starting running back Raheim Sanders. Sellers is a dual-threat type of quarterback so seeing him have some rushing attempts is not bad especially because he did get a touchdown on the ground. However, rushing upside alone will not get him to the NFL. He will need to stand firm in the pocket and deliver on his throws to gain the right as a true dual-threat type of quarterback this season. Week one is only the beginning, so check back in at the end of the season to see how he faired in his first season as the full-time starter for South Carolina.

Strengths:

  • Arm Strength. Sellers have a powerful arm, capable of making deep throws with ease. His arm strength allows him to stretch the field vertically, challenging defenses to cover more ground and opening up opportunities for big plays downfield.
  • Athleticism. Sellers is a dynamic athlete with impressive mobility. He can extend plays with his legs, evade pressure in the pocket, and pick up significant yardage on the ground. His athleticism adds a dual-threat dimension to his game, making him difficult to defend.
  • Quick Release. Sellers has a quick and compact throwing motion, allowing him to get the ball out fast. This quick release makes it difficult for defenders to react in time, particularly on short and intermediate throws.
  • Playmaking Ability. Sellers thrive in improvisational situations, where their creativity and instinct take over. Whether it’s making a throw on the run, escaping a collapsing pocket, or turning a broken play into a positive gain, he has a knack for making things happen.
  • Touch and Accuracy on Intermediate Throws. He shows a good touch on intermediate throws, particularly over the middle. Sellers can drop the ball into tight windows with precision, making them effective in situations that require more finesse than pure arm strength.
  • Pocket Presence. Despite his mobility, Sellers shows good awareness in the pocket. He has a natural feel for the rush, often stepping up or sliding to avoid pressure while keeping his eyes downfield. This ability to maintain composure under duress is a key asset.

Areas of Improvement

  • Consistency and Decision-Making. Sellers sometimes struggle with consistency in their decision-making, particularly when under pressure. He can force throws into tight windows or take unnecessary risks, leading to turnovers.
  • Footwork Mechanics. While athletic, Sellers’ footwork can be inconsistent, especially when setting up to throw. At times, he relies too much on his arm strength rather than proper foot placement, which can affect the accuracy and velocity of his passes.
  • Deep Ball Accuracy. Although he has the arm strength to throw deep, Sellers’ accuracy on long passes can be hit or miss. He sometimes struggles with placing the ball where only his receiver can catch it, leading to overthrows or missed opportunities for big plays.
  • Reading Defenses. Sellers is still developing his ability to read complex defenses. He can be slow to recognize disguised coverages or blitzes, leading to mistakes in his decision-making. Improving his pre-snap reads and understanding of defensive schemes will be important.
  • Ball Security. Sellers have shown a tendency to fumble when hit, particularly when scrambling or taking hits in the pocket. Ball security is a critical area for improvement to avoid costly turnovers and maintain possession in key situations.
  • Inexperience. As a young quarterback, Sellers lacks extensive experience at the college level. This inexperience can lead to growing pains as he adjusts to the speed and complexity of the game, particularly against high-level competition.

Draft Stock: Eligible 2027

Consensus Projected Draft Capital: TBD

Personal Projected Draft Capital: Day Three Prospect

Ideal Landing Spot: Seattle Seahawks

Sellers has shown flashes of brilliance that suggest he could one day be a first-round NFL talent. His physical attributes, including a strong arm and notable athleticism, give him a high ceiling. However, Sellers is far from reaching that potential at this stage. He needs to refine his mechanics, improve his decision-making, and gain more experience under center. These areas of development make him closer to a fourth-round or later prospect currently. Sellers has a significant journey ahead before he can be considered among the elite quarterbacks.

Despite the need for progression, Sellers could be an intriguing fit for the Seattle Seahawks. Under the possible guidance of Geno Smith, who has demonstrated remarkable football IQ and the ability to execute Seattle’s West Coast offense. With Smith as a mentor, Sellers could develop into a well-rounded quarterback at the next level. Smith’s experience and ability to manage a game could serve as a blueprint for Sellers, who, with time and coaching, could learn to read defenses and make quick, smart decisions. His potential to absorb and apply these lessons makes him an appealing prospect for the Seahawks, who could benefit from a young, moldable quarterback. Moreover, Sellers brings a level of athleticism that surpasses that of players like Sam Howell, making him an ideal candidate to eventually lead Seattle’s offense. The Seahawks’ system thrives on quarterbacks who can extend plays and make things happen outside of the pocket. If he can combine his athleticism with the decision-making and precision that Smith has mastered, Sellers could evolve into a quarterback capable of leading Seattle deep into the playoffs.

Fantasy Impact

Sellers has the potential to be a game-changer in the college fantasy football landscape due to his dual-threat ability, which makes him a valuable asset in leagues that reward rushing quarterbacks. His athleticism allows him to extend plays and pick up significant yardage on the ground, which could translate into consistent fantasy points. However, for Sellers to become a true fantasy star, he needs to develop his passing consistency and decision-making. As he refines his accuracy and becomes more comfortable reading defenses, his value will skyrocket, making him a top-tier fantasy option. Until then, he remains a high-upside, developmental pick who could pay off in a big way for fantasy managers willing to invest in his potential.
