This week we talk about six matchups and 14 different players that are looking to make a statement to begin the 2024 college football season.

Syracuse @ Pittsburgh (19)

Game is Scheduled for Thursday October 24 at 7:30PM (EST)

Syracuse – Quarterback – Kyle McCord

McCord has found his stride at Syracuse, with 19 touchdowns and only 6 interceptions so far this season. He has demonstrated the ability to balance aggression with smart decision-making. His 360 passing yards per game, with 65.5% completion, highlight both his efficiency and explosiveness. One of the defining elements of his success has been his precision on deep passes over the middle, connecting on 90% of throws that travel 20 or more yards. McCord’s ability to attack this part of the field has kept defenses on their heels, forcing safeties to drop deep and opening up opportunities for his receivers underneath. His growing chemistry with the receiving corps has made him a nightmare for opposing secondaries and a focal point of Syracuse’s offense.

In an upcoming Thursday night matchup, McCord will face an aspiring young quarterback eager to make a name for himself under the prime-time lights. While the pressure is on both teams, McCord’s experience and recent form give him a distinct edge. He has thrived in high-pressure situations, showing poise in the pocket and an ability to make game-changing plays. Opposing defenses have struggled to find answers for his deep-ball accuracy, and if McCord can replicate his success over the middle, Syracuse has a strong chance to take control of the game. However, his opponent brings plenty of raw talent and hunger, promising an exciting quarterback duel. This game will not only test McCord’s consistency but also offer him an opportunity to solidify his status as a top-tier college quarterback.

Pittsburgh – Quarterback – Eli Holstein

Pittsburgh’s redshirt freshman quarterback has emerged as a key playmaker, delivering an impressive season filled with consistent performances. Outside of a rare dip in production last week, Holstein has thrown for at least three touchdowns in every other game. He has shown the ability to lead the offense with precision and confidence. His efforts have been instrumental in guiding Pittsburgh to significant victories over Cincinnati and North Carolina, both of which bolstered the team’s momentum. So far this season, Holstein has completed 63.5% of his passes, tallying 15 touchdowns against only five interceptions. He demonstrates a solid mix of accuracy and decision-making. His poise in the pocket and ability for finding the end zone early in his career hint at his growing potential as a top collegiate quarterback.

This week, Holstein will face another major test as he squares off against a quarterback who is also making waves after transferring to his new team. The matchup presents a compelling storyline, pitting two emerging stars against each other in what could be a thrilling battle. Holstein will need to maintain his composure and efficiency, especially if the game turns into a shootout. Despite his youth, he has proven that he can rise to the occasion, making key throws in crunch time and minimizing costly mistakes. If he continues to perform at a high level, Holstein has the chance to not only keep Pittsburgh in the win column but also further cement himself as the leader of the offense. This game offers yet another opportunity for him to showcase his growth and build on what has been an exciting breakout season.

Boise State (17) @ UNLV

Game is Scheduled for Friday, October 25 at 10:30PM (EST)

Boise State – Running Back – Ashton Jeanty

Jeanty has been a force to be reckoned with this season, powering the Broncos’ offense with his explosive playmaking ability. He has been especially effective after contact, with an impressive 73% of his rushing yards coming after the first hit, making him nearly impossible to bring down on initial tackles. His physicality and determination have translated directly into points, as he’s already racked up 17 touchdowns on the season. Whether running through defenders or finding open space, Jeanty has shown he can carry the load and dominate games on the ground. However, this week he faces what may be his toughest challenge yet in the form of a strong UNLV defense. While Oregon’s defense posed an early challenge in week two, the Ducks’ current form is not what it once was, making this matchup Jeanty’s first true test of the season.

UNLV’s defense will look to slow down Jeanty by stacking the box and forcing Boise State to rely more on the passing game, but doing so is easier said than done. Even against loaded fronts, Jeanty has excelled in breaking tackles and gaining yards after contact. If Boise State hopes to come out on top, Jeanty will need to continue his streak of dominance, not only grinding out tough yards but also finding the end zone as he has all season. His ability to take over games gives Boise State an edge. However, this matchup will push him to his limits. If Jeanty can break through UNLV’s defense the same way he has against other teams, it will be a statement performance that solidifies his status as one of the nation’s top running backs.

UNLV – Wide Receiver – Ricky White

White has become the go-to target in the Rebels’ offense, consistently delivering big plays and clutch performances. His reliable hands and ability to create separation have resulted in 605 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. Plus, an impressive 68.2% catch rate. Over the past four weeks, he has been on a tear, posting three games with over 120 receiving yards, two with double-digit receptions, and two multi-touchdown performances. This level of production has made White a vital part of UNLV’s game plan. However, he will need to shine even brighter in the upcoming matchup against a team with a Heisman-caliber running back. White’s performance could be pivotal, not only to take pressure off UNLV’s ground game but also to keep them competitive.

With NFL scouts and fans tuning in for this Friday night showdown, White has a prime opportunity to raise his draft stock by showing he can excel. Boise State’s defense will likely prioritize stopping White, meaning he must take advantage of opportunity given and exploit any soft coverage. His ability to stretch the field and come up with contested catches could shift the momentum and help UNLV keep pace offensively. If White can continue his recent form with another standout performance, he will not only enhance his reputation as a playmaker but also draw more attention from pro scouts. A big game here could cement him as a serious NFL prospect.

LSU (8) @ Texas A&M (14)

Game is Scheduled for Saturday, October 26 at 7:30PM (EST)

LSU – Running Back – Caden Durham

LSU freshman running back has emerged as a key piece of the Tigers’ offense. With a powerful yet explosive running style, Durham has taken full advantage of his opportunities. He is averaging an impressive 6.2 yards per carry. His 200 yards after contact highlight his strength and ability to break tackles. On the other hand, his speed in the open field adds another layer to his game. Durham is quick to hit gaps with precision and bursts to the outside with velocity, making him a dual threat between the tackles and on perimeter runs. LSU now has a dependable ground game, and Durham’s skill set has made him an important complement to their passing attack.

However, Durham will need to step up this week against a tough Texas A&M run defense that poses a bigger challenge than he faced against Ole Miss. In that matchup, he struggled to find a rhythm, and any similar missteps could put LSU’s offense at risk. To succeed, Durham must take advantage of every crease in A&M’s defensive front. If he can keep drives alive with tough yards after contact and break a few explosive plays, it will open up LSU’s offense and keep the Aggies on their heels. A strong performance against a top-tier defense would only validate Durham’s early success.

Texas A&M – Defensive Front

Texas A&M’s edge rushers Nic Scourton and Shemar Turner have been pivotal in establishing the Aggies as one of the toughest run defenses in the SEC. Against conference opponents, A&M has allowed just 86.25 rushing yards per game. Scourton brings explosive quickness off the edge, while Turner uses his size and power to control blockers and funnel runners back inside. Their disciplined play has helped the Aggies shut down opposing ground attacks all season. However, this week they will face one of their toughest tests yet in LSU freshman Caden Durham, whose blend of strength and speed makes him a unique challenge.

Durham’s ability to bounce outside and burst through gaps will put extra pressure on Scourton and Turner to maintain their assignments. Any breakdowns along the edge could allow Durham to exploit space and turn small gains into big plays. Fortunately for A&M, run defense has been one of their most reliable strengths, with Scourton and Turner both excelling at shedding blocks and making tackles in the backfield. If they can contain Durham early and force LSU into obvious passing situations, it will shift the momentum in A&M’s favor. This matchup will test the Aggies’ defensive discipline, and a strong showing from Scourton and Turner will be essential to keeping Durham in check and securing another impressive defensive performance in SEC play.

Nebraska @ Ohio State (4)

Game Scheduled for Saturday October 26 at Noon (EST)

Nebraska – Quarterback – Dylan Raiola

Raiola started the season on fire, showing flashes of brilliance with his arm talent and decision-making. However, the past three weeks have been challenging, as Raiola’s production has dipped significantly. During this stretch, he has completed less than 65% of his passes and thrown just one touchdown to four interceptions. With defenses adjusting to his style of play, Raiola has struggled to find rhythm, leading to stalled drives and missed opportunities in key moments. Now, with a daunting matchup against Ohio State’s defense looming, the pressure is on for the freshman to bounce back—not necessarily to win but to show growth and resilience.

This game will be more about progress than the final score, as Nebraska needs to see Raiola take charge and finish drives through the air. Sustaining long drives against Ohio State will be a challenge, but Raiola must prove he can make smart decisions under pressure and avoid costly turnovers. Even if the scoreboard does not favor Nebraska, positive strides in Raiola’s leadership and execution could be a huge takeaway. A solid performance here could be a confidence booster, setting the tone for Raiola to reclaim his early-season form and finish the year on a high note.

Ohio State – Defensive Back – Denzel Burke

Burke has been one of the most reliable players in the Buckeyes’ secondary this season, but his last outing against Oregon was a rough one. He allowed a season-worst 179 yards on eight receptions, giving up two touchdowns—his first allowed all year. The performance was uncharacteristic for a player widely regarded as one of the top defensive backs in his class. Oregon’s receivers exploited mismatches and breakdowns in coverage, something Burke will need to address as Ohio State looks ahead to its next opponent. Despite the tough game, Burke’s talent and track record suggest he is more than capable of bouncing back with a statement performance.

This week provides Burke with the perfect opportunity to reset and remind everyone why he is considered a top prospect. A strong showing in coverage, paired with his usual physicality and ball skills, will help erase the memory of his struggles against Oregon. His ability to lock down opposing receivers will be crucial for Ohio State’s defensive success going forward. Burke has shown resilience throughout his career, and another misstep would be surprising. With a bounce-back game, he can restore confidence in both himself and the Buckeyes’ secondary.

Penn State (3) @ Wisconsin

Game scheduled Saturday October 26 7:30PM (EST)

Penn State – Running Backs

Penn State running backs Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen form one of the most dangerous backfield duos in college football. Both players possess a blend of speed and power, making it difficult for defenses to contain them. Singleton’s explosiveness allows him to hit gaps quickly and break long runs. Allen’s physicality and balance help him gain tough yards after contact. Together, they have made Penn State’s ground game a nightmare for opposing defenses. They consistently wear down front sevens and open up opportunities in the passing game. Their ability to extend plays after first contact forces defenders to gang-tackle.

However, this week presents a tough challenge against a resurgent Wisconsin defense that has found its rhythm. After suffering back-to-back losses earlier in the season, Wisconsin has tightened up considerably. In each of their last three games they have allowed no more than seven points. The Badgers have shown impressive discipline, especially in run defense, which will test the resolve of Singleton and Allen. To succeed, the Nittany Lions will need both backs to bring their best, using their combination of speed and power to find cracks in Wisconsin’s front. If Singleton and Allen can break through early and wear down the Badgers over time, Penn State will have a chance to control the game. But if Wisconsin’s defense holds firm, it could be one of the toughest outings the Penn State duo faces all season.

Wisconsin – Linebacker – Jaheim Thomas

Thomas has established himself as one of the top gap closers in the Big Ten. He consistently makes key plays to disrupt opposing run games. With 21 run stops on the season, Thomas has been a vital part of Wisconsin’s defensive resurgence over the past three weeks. His instincts and ability to shoot gaps quickly have made it difficult for offenses to find any rhythm on the ground. Thomas’s individual efforts have played a significant role in holding opponents to just seven points or fewer in recent games. However, this week presents a new level of difficulty as he faces one of the most talented backfields in the conference.

This matchup will be a true test for Thomas. Singleton and Allen offer a blend of speed and strength that few defenses have been able to contain. Thomas will need to bring his A-game. If he can continue his run-stopping dominance, he will give Wisconsin a chance to control the tempo of the game and force Penn State to rely more heavily on the pass. But if he struggles to contain the duo, the Badgers’ defense could face a long night.

Kansas @ Kansas State (16)

Game Scheduled for Saturday October 19 at 8PM (EST)

Kansas – Running Back – Devin Neal

Neal’s ability to move the chains is unmatched, averaging an impressive 5.9 yards per carry while showcasing a combination of speed and power. With 474 of his 691 rushing yards coming after contact, he proves to be exceptionally difficult to bring down. Neal consistently fights through tackles to gain additional yardage. His physical running style has resulted in 29 missed tackles forced this season. Neal’s playmaking ability makes him the best weapon for the Kansas offense. His capacity to make big plays energizes the team. When Neal is on the field, defenses must commit extra resources to contain him, often opening up opportunities for his teammates in the passing game. Neal will undoubtedly be a focal point of the Jayhawks offensive strategy. If he can maintain his high level of performance and keep the momentum going, he could elevate his status further into a top running back of the 2025 draft class.

Kansas State – Running Back – D.J. Giddens

With an impressive 842 rushing yards and a remarkable average of 6.6 yards per carry, Giddens has been pivotal in Kansas State’s success this season. His ability to gain 602 yards after contact speaks volumes about his toughness and determination. He consistently breaks tackles and powers through defenders to keep plays alive. Additionally, his 39 missed tackles forced show his elusive running style, making him a constant threat on the field. Giddens combines speed and strength seamlessly. He is able to break away for long gains while always keeping his feet moving to maximize yardage.

Giddens’s serves as a catalyst that opens up opportunities for his teammates. His explosiveness forces defenses to account for him, creating mismatches that can be exploited in both the running and passing games. As he continues to shine in every opportunity, Giddens is not only solidifying his reputation as a top-tier running back but also elevating the entire Wildcats’ offense. His ability to gain tough yards and contribute significantly to the ground game allows Kansas State to control the tempo and keep opposing defenses guessing.
