Rookie Profile: Quinyon Mitchell

Rookie Profile: Quinyon Mitchell, Cornerback, Philadelphia Eagles

Welcome to the Rookie Profile for Quinyon Mitchell a 3-star prospect out of Williston High School in Williston, FL. He committed to Toledo in June 2018 before choosing to de-commit in September 2018. The following year in December of 2019 Mitchell would recommit to Toledo.

Mitchell played in 4 games his freshman year. In his second season, he picked up the pace. Through 12 games he gained 34 total tackles. However, the focus was his ability to break up passes became noticeable.

His third season was the best of his collegiate career. Mitchell helped lead Toledo to a MAC Championship. He did improve his total tackles by 6 from the year before. But the impressive stat was he had 5 interceptions with 2 touchdowns that season. On top of that, he had 19 total pass deflections with 38.6% completion against passes thrown his way.

In his final season through 13 games, he had 41 total tackles with 18 pass deflections. Only one interception. On the other hand, he allowed 43.5% of passes to be completed. Plus, he allowed zero touchdowns all season!

Draft Capital & Landing Spot

Draft Capital- Round 1 Pick 22

  • One of the biggest needs for the Philadelphia Eagles going into the draft this year was the cornerback position. The Eagles have two veteran cornerbacks in Darius Slay and James Bradberry. Both began to show some signs of slowing down last season. Quinyon Mitchell was a safety plan. He can make a push for the starting role, but he will likely sit behind Slay and Bradberry for the first few games, if not the season.

Landing Spot- Philadelphia Eagles

  • This was a chess move for the Philadelphia Eagles. Although Mitchell might not see snaps as a full-time starter right away he will be learning from the best. Darius Slay will be a good mentor to start and get Mitchell prepped for when it is his time. Mitchell was a ball-hawking corner at Toledo that did not allow one touchdown on over 400 snaps. He is a quick versatile athlete with excellent closing speed. Quinyon Mitchell is a building block to the Eagle’s future secondary.

Fantasy Impact

I love the landing spot for Mitchell. However, he might not get a starter until mid/late season or even next year. But with his talented abilities in breaking up passes or finding the ball carriers effectively, he can become a critical defensive back for our fantasy teams.

Quinyon Mitchell checked every box in what one might be looking for in an IDP player. He tackles well. His ability to find the ball and force a turnover is superb. Plus, he has even taken some interceptions back for scores. It may take some time for him to actively see the field, but when he does one will be happy that they drafted him.
