2024 Exclusive Sneak Peek: Brandon Dorlus

2024 Exclusive Sneak Peek: Brandon Dorlus, DL, Oregon

Welcome to the Exclusive Sneak Peek: Brandon Dorlus, was a 3-star prospect out of Deerfield Beach High School in Deerfield Beach, Florida. He had 29 offers before committing to Virginia Tech in 2018. However, a few days after committing he decommitted and visited Oregon. Five days later he officially committed to Oregon.

His freshman season would give him minimal action through 5 games. In 2020 he did see an uptick in playing 2 more games but still had a minimal role.

Dorlus started to get rolling in his third season. He became a lead defender for Oregon playing through 13 games. As an impact rusher off the edge, he gained 25 total tackles with 2 pass breakups and 2.5 sacks.

In his fourth season, he got after the ball carriers. He would go on to have a career-high in tackles with 39 total. Plus, adding 2 pass breakups and 2.5 sacks.

Finally, in his fifth and final collegiate season, he understood how to utilize his skill set. He did only get 25 total tackles. But the upside was his impact at the line. He had 9 pass breakups. Plus, 5 sacks showing his ability to get behind the line and attack.

Scouting Reports

Strengths

  • Athletic Freak! Unnatural game speed with a great wingspan to pull the runner down while being held up by a block.
  • Exceptional ball awareness. Uses his hands to knock down the pass at the line efficiently.
  • Quick & agile. Uses his quickness and agility to swim around defenders gaining access behind the line.
  • This causes a double team as his long arms cause discomfort to solo blockers.
  • High motor. Consistently plays with everything he has on every snap.
  • Explosiveness crossed with unnatural length allows him to be a terror in the passing & run game.

Weaknesses

  • Long wingspan, but lacks the hip movement to shift directions effectively.
  • Explosive off the edge, but speed is not elite.
  • Ball pursuit. He has the speed, but not fast enough to catch an explosive back cutting to the outside or in the open field.

Pre-Draft Analysis

Expected Draft Capital: Round 3

Ideal Landing Spot: Denver Broncos

Courtesy of nflmockdraftdatabase.com

I originally had the Broncos taking an edge rusher with their 12th overall pick. However, recent news has stated the Broncos will release QB Russell Wilson. If that happens then I fully expect the Broncos to either trade up or take a QB at 12. Possibly JJ McCarthy. The Broncos do not have a second-round pick. Their pick is currently the Saint’s pick. This leads me to the third round where they will need to address their defensive line.

If Dorlus is there he will become a menace off the edge for them. He will help strengthen the defensive line with his quickness and awareness. He attacks behind the line of scrimmage well. But he also disrupts the passing game. The AFC West currently has two top-tier QBs Justin Herbert & Patrick Mahomes. The Broncos need every bit of help in causing chaos in the passing game knowing they play both the Chiefs & Chargers twice a year. Plus, his agile ability and long arms will help strengthen their run defense.
