Scouting Reports

Strengths

  • Possesses incredible size and strength for a running back.
  • Is extremely versatile and is above average as both a runner and a receiver.
  • Has an excellent ability to break tackles and fight through multiple defenders and crowded lines.
  • Is an excellent route runner for a running back and his skillset should transition well to the next level.

Weaknesses

  • He struggles with pass protection and will be a liability in blocking.
  • He is not elite in space and lacks the elusiveness to be a lethal home run hitter.
  • He often misjudges his blocks and hits the wrong hole. His vision is a major concern.
  • Lacks any high-level elusiveness or explosiveness. Is an early down hammer.

For as long as Austin Ekeler has been a Charger he has always operated more as a finesse/pass-catching back and not as much as a between-the-tackles- runner.

Adding Johnson to spell the again Ekeler would allow Johnson to be the early downs grinder and would allow the Chargers to take the wear and tear off their aging superstar. This could help him to prolong what is left of his career.

The combination of Johnson and Ekeler could be an excellent 1-2 punch.
