Scouting Reports
Strengths
- Incredible burst off the line. Led all LBs with 1.54 10yd split at the NFL combine.
- He displayed his coverage skills throughout his college career. Capable of guarding TEs or RBs when asked to.
- Play recognition. He has a high IQ for the game to understand when he needs to close in on gaps to be an effective run-stopper.
- Versatility across the board. Run stopper. Ability to drop into coverage. Specialist in blitz packages to cause chaos behind the line.
- Smooth transitions in a change of direction scenarios. This allows him to be effective in coverage schemes.
- Effective tackler. Uses his hands and wingspan to maneuver around blocks and properly wrap up the ball carrier.
Weaknesses
- Can miss open-field tackles against more agile ball carriers.
- Not a pure coverage LB, yes he is effective, but he should not be called upon to just coverage. He’s a better run-stopper.
- If he does not beat the blocker off the line at times he can struggle to shed the blocker.
Pre-Draft Analysis
Expected Draft Capital: Late Round 1
Ideal Landing Spot: Detroit Lions
At best Cooper can sneak into the end of round one. If so I can see a team like the Lions drafting him. Cooper brings aggression and speed to any team. His acceleration at the snap is unmatched. That “Detroit Toughness” is Edgerrin Cooper.
The duo of Aidan Hutchinson plus Edgerrin Cooper would strike fear in any opponent’s eye. Plus, Cooper’s ability to drop into coverage means he can guard the NFC North Tight Ends like TJ Hockenson or Cole Kmet. His prowess to attack the RBs will be much appreciated in Detroit allowing him to become a premier defender for their team for years to come.
