Scouting Reports

Strengths

  • Good pass protector. Does not get beaten off the snap and knows how to utilize his hands when called to block.
  • Ball control. Runs with full control when the ball is in his hands.
  • Natural playmaker. Soft hands & good effort to keep the play alive. Fights for the extra yardage.
  • Solid awareness. Finds the weak spot in zone coverages efficiently.
  • Uses his size to his advantage when going out for the catch. Easily overpowers defenders with his 6’6 frame and strength.

Weaknesses

  • He is big but he can get bullied at the line. Against top-edge rushers, he may struggle to hold them back.
  • Stiff movement in route running. Does not catch and transition into a runner efficiently.
  • Struggles with his hip movement. He uses his size to make the plays but lacks smooth transitions when catching & turning or blocking edge rushers.

Pre-Draft Analysis

Expected Draft Capital: Round 5

Ideal Landing Spot: Houston Texans

The Houston Texans need depth at their TE position. Schultz figures to be their starting TE again, but beyond that the room is slim. Wiley has the size to be an effective TE at the next level. He could use a year or two learning behind a TE like Schultz who has found success at the next level. Plus, his size would allow him to become another red-zone target for Stroud.

Wiley could become an effective red-zone target. But with his blocking skills, he could see the field more often than not. Taking him this late, day 3, means the Texans could build in other positions of need while still acquiring a pass-catching threat.
