2024 Exclusive Sneak Peek: Joe Milton

2024 Exclusive Sneak Peek: Joe Milton, QB Tennessee

Welcome to the Exclusive Sneak Peek: Joe Milton, was a 3-star prospect out of Olympia High School in Orlando, Florida. He originally committed to Michigan in 2017. After 3 seasons with the Wolverines, he transferred to Tennessee.

His first two seasons at Michigan were red-shirt years. Milton only saw action in 6 games within those first 2 seasons. Or 7 games if you include the bowl game in 2018 vs Florida.

In year 3 at Michigan, he played in 6 games. His completion percentage was poor, below 60%. But he did manage to throw for over 1,000 yards. On the other hand, he threw 4 touchdowns with 4 interceptions.

Milton transferred to Tennessee in 2021 with hopes for a fresh start. However, Hendon Hooker was their starting QB. Unfortunately, Milton only threw for 375 yards through 8 games. His completion percentage was again poor, below 60%.

Hendon Hooker continued to be the starting QB at Tennessee. This would become Milton’s 5th collegiate season. There was some surprising upside this season from Milton. Again, he only saw action in 8 games. But he did throw for 971 yards on 64.6% completion. Plus, he had 10 passing touchdowns with no interceptions.

The time was now! Hooker would leave for the NFL. All signs now point to Joe Milton finally getting the full-time starting job. To Milton, this could be considered his breakout season. He threw for 2,813 yards with a 4:1 touchdown to interception ratio. The upside was he showed his dual-threat capabilities. Milton also had 299 rushing yards for an additional 7 touchdowns.

Scouting Reports

Strengths

  • Rapid release at any point. Whether on the run or in the pocket he gets the ball out quickly.
  • Smooth pocket awareness. He understands when he needs to escape some pressure.
  • Quick feet to gain yardage on the run, or escape the pocket while throwing accurately on the run.
  • Has a cannon for an arm. Probably the strongest arm in the class.
  • Prototypical size. Some will confuse him for Anthony Richardson due to his frame. *Richardson is probably faster & more accurate*

Weaknesses

  • His cannon arm gets him in trouble. Although he is accurate he can overthrow or under anticipate his receivers causing incompletions.
  • Age. 24-year-old prospect entering the NFL.
  • Needs to fine-tune the fundamentals about going through his reads, reading the coverage post-snap, and some basic IQ for the game.

Pre-Draft Analysis

Expected Draft Capital: Round 6

Ideal Landing Spot: Dallas Cowboys

Right now the Dallas Cowboys do have a complementary pick at the end of the 6th round. They did trade for Trey Lance last season. However, friendly competition never hurt anybody. I do not think Lance is the next up for the Cowboys at the QB position. That does not mean that Milton would be.

Milton can hit every NFL throw. Or I should say he can throw every NFL throw. But hitting his targets is a different story. He has a cannon arm that could suit well for the Cowboys when they ask their receivers to stretch the field. Unless Milton blows the combine and/or pro day out the water though he is a late day 3 pick for me.
