Devy Diamonds: Carson Beck, QB, Georgia
Welcome to Devy Diamonds: Carson Beck was a 4-star prospect out of Mandarin High School in Jacksonville, Florida. He committed to the Georgia Bulldogs in March of 2019. At that time 247 sports had him as a Day 3 pick despite Beck leading Mandarin High School to a Class 8A state championship.
In his first 2 years at Georgia Beck only saw action in 7 games total. Through those 7 games, he had 62% completion for 486 yards. Plus, he had 6 touchdowns, however, he threw 2 interceptions.
Last season Beck got the starting job for the entire season. He did not disappoint. He threw 3,941 yards on 72.4% completion. His touchdown to interception ratio was slightly better throwing for 24 touchdowns with only 6 interceptions. Beck also added 4 rushing touchdowns.
2024 Outlook: What to Expect
As Georgia’s starting quarterback, Carson Beck enters the 2024 season poised to build upon his previous success. With a year of experience under his belt, Beck is primed to lead the offense with confidence and precision. The addition of dynamic playmakers in the receiving corps, such as matchup nightmare in Colbie Young and the versatile running back prospect Trevor Etienne provides Beck with potent weapons to exploit defenses. Young has the size, catch radius, and ability to stretch the field vertically. While Etienne’s ability to catch passes out of the backfield adds a new dimension to the offense. Plus, returning wide receiver Dominic Lovett will look to get to his 2022 days at Missouri where he had over 800 yards receiving. With these weapons at his disposal, Beck’s ability to distribute the ball effectively and capitalize on mismatches will be crucial in Georgia’s quest for success this upcoming season.
Strengths:
- Confident in the pocket with coordination throughout his body to deliver timed throws with zip or a soft touch.
- Pocket awareness. Adjust accordingly with his feet to extend the play or has a 6th sense to know when a defender is sneaking behind him.
- Poised under pressure. He does not seem to fold when the pocket collapses, but instead remains calm to deliver clean accurate throws.
- Ball Placement. Delivers from every angle on slant routes or seam routes down the line. He knows where his mark is and he hits.
- Diamond IQ. He goes through his reads quickly and delivers time and time again in high pressure scenarios.
Areas of Improvement
- Inexperience. Only one full year of starts under his belt, but he delivered. Can he do it again?
- Athletic? Yes. But lacks the dual threat capabilities. He will not gain much yardage with his feet, or extend the play much outside the pocket.
- Hesitates at times to make throws with slower release of the ball as he tries to await his WR’s to find an open lane.
- Arm strength. He can hit with precision, but his better accuracy comes from short and intermediate throws rather than deep shots down field.
Draft Stock: Eligible 2025
Consensus Projected Draft Capital: First-Round prospect
Personal Projected Draft Capital: First Round prospect
Ideal Landing Spot: Las Vegas Raiders
Next year’s quarterback class will not be as strong as the 2024 class. With that being said Beck will be one of the top quarterbacks on the board. Right now, I have him as QB2 of the 2025 class behind Quinn Ewers. I believe the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders will both have a top 5 draft pick next year. Both teams will be in need of a quarterback. With that being said I think the Las Vegas Raiders would choose Beck over Ewers. Now everything can change once we get to the 2025 draft, but right now these two quarterbacks are at the top of the class for me.
The Las Vegas Raiders would choose Beck simply because he has that winning mentality. He comes from an organization that has seen the top of the mountain. He knows how to win and the culture in Las Vegas is changing under new head coach Antonio Pierce. If Beck is able to lead the Bulldogs to an SEC championship and come out victorious then Raiders will jump all over him. It is worth noting that Quinn Ewers is now in the SEC, and if he takes Texas to the SEC championship and comes out victorious then the Raiders could be in on him. Either way the quarterback competition between Ewers and Beck will be neck-to-neck all season long.
The benefit of the Raiders taking Beck is that they drafted his tight end, Brock Bowers, in the first round of the 2024 draft. Bowers should have an immediate role seeing a good amount of playing time in his rookie season. So, bringing in a quarterback like Beck, his former quarterback, will only strengthen what Bowers does. They had excellent chemistry all of 2023. Not to mention, their current RB1, Zamir White, is also a former Georgia Bulldog. Carson Beck has the leadership mentality and the fundamentals you want in a quarterback. He would go into the Raiders camp and immediately become their starter.
Fantasy Impact
Carson Beck could become a low-end QB2 for fantasy, but will likely be more of a QB3. I think he will have the potential to be a top 20 quarterback in fantasy. However, it will be a rare occasion for him to be a top 15 quarterback or higher. Think Baker Mayfield. He will not do much for the community to rave about him. On the other hand, he will do just enough to not be a scrap on your roster. He will need to get better with his deep passes and add some mobility to increase his fantasy production. If he were in the NFL today I would have him between QB20-QB25, as that is where I think he will finish majority of his seasons.
