Rookie Profile: Jacob Cowing, Wide Reciever, San Fransisco 49ers
This is the Rookie Profile for Jacoc Cowing, Arizona Wide Reciever. Cowing, a two-star-rated prospect and the 418th-ranked wide receiver in the 2019 class, graduated from Maricopa High School in Maricopa, Arizona.
Cowing enrolled at UTEP as a freshman and excelled as the top wide receiver during his first season. He led the team in receiving yards, gaining 550 yards on 31 receptions and scoring 3 touchdowns.
In his second year at college, Cowing once again stood out as the top receiver for the UTEP team. He led the team in receptions and was responsible for a remarkable 41% of the total receiving yards this season. He managed to record 691 yards from 41 receptions and scored three touchdowns.
In his junior year, Cowing had a breakout season. He ranked fifth in college football with 1,354 receiving yards on 69 receptions and 7 touchdowns, and he was awarded first-team all-conference USA honors. Cowing transferred from UTEP to the University of Arizona to be closer to his son.
Despite the challenge of upgrading to the Power 5 conference, Cowing had an impressive first year. Cowing led the Pac-12 in receptions with 85 for 1,034 yards and 7 touchdowns. He proved to everyone that he belonged, and more than that, he exceeded their expectations.
He chose to go back to Arizona for his senior year and was named to the preseason Biletnikoff award watch list and the second-team preseason All-American. Cowing once again became a primary target for the Arizona offense. He broke the record for receptions with 90, gaining 848 yards and scoring 13 touchdowns.
Jacob Cowing went to the NFL combine and turned heads with his 4.38 forty-yard dash. Being undersized and putting up a 6.38 RAS score is respectable. Cowing was the 20th wide receiver selected in the NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers in the 4th round, pick 135.

- Wide receivers drafted in the 4th round of the NFL draft have had an awful hit rate in the past decade. The odds are against them becoming a fantasy-relevant player. However, Cowing has an advantage in that he will be playing an active role suited to his talents at the slot position. If he can capitalize on this early in the season, it could be an opportunity for Cowing.
Landing Spot – San Fransisco 49ers
- Landing in San Francisco is tough, and Cowing is currently buried on the depth chart behind the best skill position group in the NFL: Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, George Kittle, Christian McCaffrey, and the first-round rookie Ricky Pearsall. With the talent in San Fransisco, Cowing will have to earn everything.

Fantasy Impact
Cowing is one of the most productive wide receivers in his class. He ranks 95th in Breakout Age, 99th in college dominator, and Career Target Share. San Francisco is likely counting on his strong production profile for the long term. It may be tough for Cowing to break into the lineup, other than as a change-of-pace player in the slot. However, there is potential for him in the long term if San Francisco moves on from Aiyuk, Samuel, and Kittle. You might consider keeping Cowing on the taxi squad for a couple of years to see if he can establish a consistent role for fantasy football. It’s unlikely that he will become a consistent starter in managed leagues.
