Rookie Profile: Javon Baker

Rookie Profile: Javon Baker, Wide Receiver, New England Patriots

Welcome to the Rookie Profile: Javon Baker, a four-star recruit from Powder Springs, Georgia. Baker strung back-to-back impressive seasons to finish his high school career at McEachern High School, committing to the University of Alabama upon graduation.

As a member of the Crimson Tide, Baker barely made a mark. After playing in 19 games and recording just 9 total receptions, Baker entered the transfer portal in 2021 and finished out his collegiate career as a Knight. At the University of Central Florida, he put together two impressive seasons. He finished his UCF tenure with 108 receptions for 1937 yards and 12 touchdowns across 27 games, earning First-team All-Big 12 as a senior.

Baker has a nice combination of size and speed and should operate as an all-around weapon and depth receiver at the next level.

Measurables

Draft Capital & Landing Spot

Draft Capital- Round 4, 110th Overall

  • As the 18th wide receiver selected, Baker doesn’t exactly profile as a number one. Still, he’s got the physical tools and mental makeup of an alpha. That mentally could translate on the field, and many have noted this, making him a high-profile sleeper candidate.

Landing Spot- New England Patriots

  • With a wide-open wide receiver room and a brand new scheme and QB, New England has the best opportunity for a wideout to command targets this season. The only question is: who will step up? Baker has just as good of a chance as anyone, although fellow rookie Ja’Lynn Polk was taken two rounds earlier and appears to be the superior talent according to the team.
  • DeMario Douglas and others are already earning praise as Baker learns what it means to be a pro. He’ll have an uphill battle for playing time early, and will need to shine in a limited role to earn more work.

Fantasy Impact

Baker has a chance, but it’ll be tough sledding for the 4th round pick. Drake Maye is also learning the ropes, so the long term outlook says that Baker could become a go-to target. However, with Polk and Douglas already earning praise and possibly showing more promise, Baker could remain buried as all continue to grow together.

I’m not bullish on Baker, but he’s a nice upside shot in the 3rd round of rookie drafts. If he hits, he’ll see a dramatic value boost. It’s possible, but he’ll need to improve and command targets from Maye.
