This week we talk about seven matchups and 14 different players that are looking to make a statement to begin the 2024 college football season.

LSU (8) @ Arkansas

LSU – Wide Receiver – Kyren Lacy

Lacy is beginning to find his rhythm, posting back-to-back games with over 100 receiving yards. Plus, he has averaged an impressive 20+ yards per reception in those contests. He currently leads the team with six touchdowns. This has showcased his ability to create scoring opportunities in the passing game. However, his production has been inconsistent. Currently, he has a 53.6 percent completion rate when targeted. Additionally, his impact after the catch has been limited, with just 20.7 percent of his total yardage coming from yards after the catch. This begins to raise questions about his effectiveness beyond being a deep threat. So far, Lacy has primarily served as a field-stretcher for LSU’s offense. If the Tigers wish to stay competitive in the playoff race, he will need to evolve into a more versatile playmaker. As the season enters its second half, LSU will rely on him to contribute more consistently.

Arkansas – Running Back – Ja’Quinden Jackson

Jackson needs to rediscover the speed and elusiveness that made him so dynamic early in the season. In the first three weeks, Jackson averaged a stellar 8.4 yards per carry, demonstrating his explosiveness and big-play potential. However, over the last three games, his production has dropped sharply to just 3.3 yards per carry. The lack of performance raises concerns about his consistency and ability to perform against tougher competition. Despite this dip in efficiency, he has maintained his knack for finding the end zone. Jackson has scored in every game so far this season.

While Jackson has the tools—speed, burst, and vision—to be an effective back, he needs to showcase these traits more consistently in the second half of the season to solidify his draft value. Scouts know he has the physical abilities to make plays. On the other hand, they will want to see him translate that potential into steady production against SEC defenses. Jackson will need to recapture his early-season form, providing not only big plays but also reliable gains to help his team and boost his standing as a legitimate NFL prospect.

Kentucky – Wide Receiver – Dane Key

Key should remain the leader of the Wildcats’ receiving corps. However, he must improve his consistency in the second half of the season. Known for his ability to stretch the field using his length and long strides, Key excels in creating separation downfield. However, despite being a red-zone target, he has managed only two touchdowns this season. His 50 percent success rate on contested catches further underscores the need for improvement in high-pressure situations where physicality and concentration are essential.

Key possesses the size and athletic profile to develop into a solid NFL wide receiver, but to reach his potential, he must refine his route-running abilities and demonstrate the strength to win contested catches consistently. NFL scouts will want to see him convert more of these opportunities. This will help prove he can be reliable at the next level. As the season progresses, Key will need to become more than just a deep threat. He needs to show he can make tough catches and be a dependable target for Kentucky’s offense in the red zone.

Florida – Quarterback – DJ Lagway

Florida’s two-quarterback approach has not been effective, and it is time for Lagway to take over as the full-time starter. Lagway has shown some typical freshman mistakes. However, his talent and potential make him the quarterback who can return Florida to national prominence. His 65.3 percent completion rate leaves room for growth, but it is a solid start for a freshman. Lagway has the ability to hit his receivers in stride. Currently, he has just 26 fewer passing yards than quarterback Graham Mertz despite 22 fewer attempts, proving that he can move the offense efficiently when given the opportunity. Florida’s 3-3 start reflects the need for a change. Finally, we will get that due to unfortunate circumstances. Mertz will be out for the remainder of the season. Lagway will get the reins for the rest of the season. This will not only accelerate his growth but also allow the team to build around its future leader.

Auburn – Wide Receivers – Cam Coleman

Coleman has flashed his potential through the first five games, totaling 212 receiving yards and showcasing moments that hint at a bright future. However, his three drops and 45 percent completion rate when targeted raise concerns about his consistency and focus. Despite these early struggles, Coleman’s raw talent is evident—his twitchy athleticism and smooth route running allow him to create separation with ease. He can be matchup problem for defenders. With continued development, he has the physical tools to become one of the top wide receiver prospects when his draft eligibility approaches.

It is possible that quarterback Payton Thorne’s inconsistent play has contributed to Coleman’s limited production. Auburn’s passing game has struggled overall. Regardless of the quarterback situation, Coleman’s presence on the field is noticeable, even on plays where he isn’t the intended target. His ability to draw defensive attention and open up opportunities for teammates makes him a valuable asset. As he gains more experience and refines his game, Coleman has the potential to emerge as a true playmaker. This sets the stage for a breakout in the coming seasons.

Missouri – Wide Receivers – Luther Burden

Burden is not leading the team in receiving yards. However, he remains a key contributor in the passing game with an impressive 77.5 percent completion rate when targeted. While he has only one 100-yard game this season, Burden’s ability to make plays with the ball in his hands sets him apart. He has forced 17 missed tackles, showcasing his elusiveness. Plus, 57 percent of his total yards have come after the catch. Burden’s stats may not place him among the nation’s top receivers, but his mechanics and skills on tape suggest he has the potential to excel at the next level. South Carolina @ Oklahoma

South Carolina – Running Back – Raheim Sanders

Sanders has shown glimpses of his potential this season with several explosive plays, including multiple runs of over 20 yards. His ability to force 23 missed tackles highlights his elusiveness and power, making him difficult to bring down. Sanders has also gained 258 of his 393 rushing yards after contact. This has demonstrated his ability to fight through tackles. However, his overall production—averaging just 65.5 yards per game—has been underwhelming. He will need to elevate his performance to match the expectations once placed on him as a top back in his recruiting class.

Injuries earlier in his career have limited Sanders’ burst and may have contributed to his recent struggles. This can raise concerns about his long-term durability. To improve his NFL draft stock, he will need a strong second half of the season. Hopefully, regaining the consistency and explosiveness that once made him a highly touted prospect. As it stands, his current level of production leaves him in jeopardy of slipping to a late Day 3 pick, or possibly going undrafted. A return to form over the next few games could not only solidify his role as a team leader but also significantly boost his draft prospects.

Oklahoma – Wide Receiver – Deion Burks

Oklahoma has missed the impact of Burks over the past two weeks, as his absence has left a noticeable void in the Sooners’ offense. Despite playing in just four games, Burks remains the team’s leading receiver. His reliability with a 72.2 percent catch rate has been missed. Plus, his ability to find the end zone has also been critical. Burks’ three receiving touchdowns leads the team. Without Burks, the offense has lacked a consistent playmaker capable of stretching the field and converting key opportunities.

The Sooners are eager for Burks to return this week, as his presence will improve their passing game. Burks’ combination of speed and playmaking ability makes him essential to maintaining the offense’s rhythm. His return comes at a crucial time, with Oklahoma looking to stay competitive and build momentum for the remainder of the season. Alabama (7) @ Tennessee (11)

Tennessee – Running Back – Dylan Sampson

Sampson has been the lone constant for the Volunteers’ offense this season. He has provided steady production while the passing game has struggled in recent weeks. Sampson’s relentless running style is evident in his 27 missed tackles forced. In fact, over 60 percent of his yards have come after contact. His nose for the end zone is equally impressive, with 15 rushing touchdowns. While Tennessee has a talented quarterback expected to headline the 2026 draft class, it is clear that Sampson is currently the engine that keeps the offense moving. His consistency has been remarkable, with only one game under 100 rushing yards—against Oklahoma. However, Oklahoma fields one of the top linebackers in the country—where Sampson still managed to grind out 92 yards.

As the season progresses, it is critical for Beck to tighten up his throws and minimize mistakes. These careless passes can allow victories to slip through Georgia’s fingers. With the stakes rising, improving his decision-making will be essential for maintaining the team’s momentum and ensuring they remain a contender in the SEC.

If McMillan wants to elevate his draft stock further, this is the kind of game where he needs to shine.
